Dongfeng Motor Group assembles cars and commercial vehicles for the Chinese market by pairing its government-licensed production facilities with engine and platform technology from Nissan, Honda, and Kia, each partnership wrapped in its own separate joint-venture company as required by Beijing's 50% foreign-ownership cap. Because each MIIT production licence is tied to a specific joint-venture entity rather than to Dongfeng outright, every assembly line in Wuhan and elsewhere can only run the platform it was originally approved for, so changing a platform or adding a partner means waiting years for a fresh government review rather than simply retooling the factory floor. That approval history — three active foreign partnerships each with its own regulatory permission — is the part a competitor cannot buy its way into quickly, since each licence was accumulated over decades and a new entrant would have to queue separately for every single one. The structure starts to crack if Beijing's electric-vehicle rules eventually require Chinese manufacturers to own their NEV technology outright, because the joint-venture shells that currently carry Nissan's and Honda's platform rights were built around licensing foreign combustion and hybrid designs, not around domestic ownership of the underlying technology.

The assembly line processes and the supplier coordination systems can be copied across additional Chinese factory sites once a vehicle platform design is standardized — that part spreads relatively cheaply.
