Openlane runs digital wholesale vehicle auctions where fleet companies, lease operators, and auto finance firms can list returned or repossessed vehicles to buyers across the country without anyone physically inspecting the car first — a proprietary condition-assessment algorithm, trained on the platform's own record of what vehicles were predicted to sell for versus what they actually cleared for, substitutes for the inspection step. Because every completed auction adds another predicted-versus-actual data point, the algorithm gets more accurate over time in a way a new entrant cannot replicate just by hiring engineers, since the training data only exists inside Openlane's own transaction history. State dealer licensing rules require wholesale buyers to be pre-verified before they can participate, so the pool of active bidders — and the competitive clearing prices that persuade sellers to keep listing — is not something a rival platform can simply poach.
