Anchors the Keltner channel to a 20-period EMA, exposing the central trend line from which volatility-based boundaries are measured.

The Keltner channel mid line is usually an EMA of the price. The channel itself tracks trend plus volatility.

The calculation:

Keltner Mid = 20-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA)

Why EMA instead of SMA:

  • More responsive: EMA gives more weight to recent prices
  • Smoother tracking: Better follows current price action
  • Faster signals: Reacts more quickly to trend changes

Role in Keltner Channels:

  • Channel center: Baseline from which upper and lower bands are calculated
  • Trend indicator: Direction shows overall trend
  • Support/resistance: Dynamic support in uptrends, resistance in downtrends

Comparison to Bollinger Bands:

  • Center line: Keltner uses EMA; Bollinger uses SMA
