A strong ratio is a recorded condition. Financial strength depends on whether resources can meet the right claims at the right time.
How can cash overstate liquidity?
Cash may be restricted, pledged, regulated, trapped in subsidiaries, held in another currency, or needed for daily operations. A gross balance does not show legal availability or timing.
How can equity overstate loss capacity?
Equity depends on asset carrying values. Goodwill, intangibles, receivables, inventory, deferred tax assets, and specialized property may not produce the cash implied by book value. IAS 36 provides an impairment framework, not a real-time liquidation estimate.
Goodwill-Heavy Equity
Equity ratio reads elevated for its industry, goodwill is a large share of total assets, and goodwill is large relative to shareholders equity
This screen shows one such composition: an elevated equity ratio resting substantially on goodwill rather than retained earnings or paid-in capital. It does not value the goodwill; it shows what the equity is made of.
Which obligations escape headline ratios?
Leases, pensions, guarantees, purchase commitments, supplier finance, litigation, environmental work, preferred claims, and covenants can matter. Debt totals also hide maturity dates, floating rates, collateral, and refinancing conditions.
High Equity Share With Elevated Lease Share of Assets
Equity is in the upper part of its industry's equity-to-assets range while the Leases line is a large share of total assets and of non-current assets
This screen shows a high equity share co-occurring with an elevated lease share of assets: obligations standing beside a clean-looking debt line. It does not read covenants, guarantees, or maturity dates.
How does working capital create false comfort?
Current assets may include slow inventory and overdue receivables; current liabilities may benefit from stretched suppliers. Seasonality can make the reporting date unrepresentative. Reconcile changes with cash collections and payments.
Elevated Receivables Alongside Balance-Sheet Strength
Current ratio looks favorable but receivables form a large share of current assets and have been growing
This screen shows apparent strength that depends on a receivables line that is large and growing. It does not show collectability or timing.
What evidence should you review?
Read liquidity, maturity, covenant, cash-restriction, guarantee, impairment, pension, lease, and subsequent-event notes. IFRS 7 provides financial-risk disclosure context.
Why can no single panel prove balance-sheet resilience?
No single live interpretation captures all these boundaries; the three panels above each observe one of them, and none proves availability or timing. Use relevant CompanyGraph statement observations to build a candidate list, then test availability, recoverability, contractual timing, and the physical liquidity needs of the business.
