A cheap ratio becomes a trap when the denominator, future cash flow, or path to realization is weaker than it appears.
What is a value trap?
A value trap is an investment that looks inexpensive on a familiar metric but remains impaired because earnings, assets, balance-sheet capacity, or governance deteriorate. A low price alone does not distinguish opportunity from justified discount.
How does the CompanyGraph value-trap screen work?
The Apparent Book-Value Discount, Structural Intangible Concentration interpretation requires a below-book-value reading to coexist with high intangible and goodwill concentration. It is an AND configuration based on current accounting records.
A match does not predict impairment or say intangibles lack value. It identifies a case where the apparent discount depends heavily on assets whose recoverability requires qualitative and cash-flow analysis.
Low P/B with Intangible and Goodwill Concentration
Price-to-book is low while intangibles and goodwill are a large share of the asset base
How do you test whether book value is real?
Separate cash, receivables, inventory, property, acquired intangibles, goodwill, deferred tax assets, and other balances. Ask whether each asset can generate cash in continued use or be sold, and which liabilities rank ahead of common equity.
IAS 36 provides the impairment framework, while IFRS 3 explains goodwill and acquired identifiable assets. Carrying value is not liquidation value.
What other signs point to a value trap?
Look for recurring cash shortfalls, customer loss, obsolete products, underinvestment, debt maturities, covenant pressure, dilution, pension deficits, litigation, weak capital allocation, and no credible catalyst. Normalize cyclical earnings and include necessary capex.
What can create false positives?
Brands, software, licenses, and customer relationships can support durable cash flows. Acquisition goodwill can remain economically sound. Conversely, tangible assets can also be obsolete, specialized, polluted, encumbered, or expensive to maintain.
How do you investigate a below-book candidate?
Use the panel to prioritize below-book candidates whose asset composition deserves extra work. A zero result applies only to the evaluated universe and current data. The screen does not calculate intrinsic value, impairment probability, liquidation proceeds, catalysts, or timing.
Read several annual reports, segment results, debt notes, impairment assumptions, and cash-flow statements before deciding whether the discount is opportunity or warning.
